Three things, in rough order of how much they matter. Snapback — the mains sliding sideways under a brushing contact and springing back before the ball leaves — is the mechanism most of the modern spin story rests on, and it is why slick polyester co-polymers dominate this list. Stiffness keeps the bed from swallowing the ball, so a fast, glancing swing shapes the shot instead of merely pushing it. Profile, the twisted or edged shapes many manufacturers advertise, is real but the smallest of the three, and it wears off as the edges round over.
What does not create spin is tension alone. Stringing tighter lowers power and can feel more controlled, which is often mistaken for more spin, but the bed also grips less and snaps back less.
The cost nobody puts on the packet
Of the 155 beds rated 9+ for spin, only 46 also rate 7 or better on arm friendliness. That is the trade in one number: the stiff, slick, low-powered construction that produces snapback is the same construction that returns shock to your elbow and shoulder.
